Depeche Mode

Depeche Mode (DM) est un groupe new wave britannique originaire de Basildon et formé en 1980. Groupe majeur de la scène anglo-saxonne et chef de file du courant new wave, il est l'une des rares formations des années 1980 issues du Royaume-Uni à être parvenu à « survivre » à cette décennie tout en maintenant un succès international relativement constant, devenant ainsi un pilier incontournable de l'électro-pop. Son nom - choisi à la hâte à quelques minutes du début de l'un de leurs premiers concerts - provient d'un magazine de mode français.

Stevo Pearce, manager du groupe Soft Cell et fondateur du label Some Bizarre Records, les repère et sort le titre Photographic sur une compilation intitulée Some Bizarre Album (1981) où ils côtoient d'autres futurs groupes-phares des années 1980 tels que The The et Soft Cell. Daniel Miller les fait ensuite signer sur son label Mute Records en 1981. Le groupe est toujours resté fidèle à ce label jusqu'à maintenant.

Depeche Mode connaîtra son premier grand succès aux États-Unis en 1984/1985 avec le single People Are People.

Le succès grandissant de leur synthpop au style très empreint de musique industrielle atteint son paroxysme en 1990 avec l'album Violator incluant les titres Personal Jesus, Policy Of Truth et surtout Enjoy The Silence. Les années 1990 sont marquées par l'addiction à la drogue, l'overdose et la tentative de suicide de Dave Gahan, qui ne sera désintoxiqué qu'en 1996, mais aussi par le départ d'Alan Wilder en 1995. Mais leur créativité transparaît toujours dans les albums qui suivent (Ultra en 1997, Exciter en 2001 et Playing The Angel en 2005).

La quasi-totalité des chansons est composée par Martin L. Gore (essentiellement en mode "mineur"), sauf celles du premier album (Speak and Spell) qui étaient majoritairement l'œuvre de Vince Clarke, rapidement parti fonder Yazoo puis son groupe actuel, Erasure. Depuis 2005, Dave Gahan participe à l'écriture des morceaux.

Depeche Mode réussit le tour de force de ramener vers lui des publics extrêmement variés, mêlant des mélodies souvent accrocheuses et des paroles simples mais touchantes, à une musique électronique dont l'approche reste résolument "rock", Martin Gore ayant beaucoup fait pour qu'on ne considère pas DM uniquement comme un groupe "de synthés" en apportant sa conception originale de la guitare, basée sur des riffs simples et des sons très travaillés.
