Les Bee Gees sont un groupe de musique australo-britannique et américano-britannique. Le groupe musical britannique The Bee Gees a été et reste l'un des groupes les plus populaires au monde avec une carrière s'étalant sur quatre décennies (1963-2003). Leurs chansons ont marqué à diverses reprises ces quarante années d'existence. Leurs mélodies ont été adaptées par de nombreux artistes aux styles musicaux divers (symphonique, pop, hard rock, reggae, variétés françaises, disco...). Aujourd’hui, le groupe reste toujours l’objet d’une popularité étonnamment vivace, leurs chansons sont jouées et reprises dans le monde entier. Les auteurs-compositeurs, les frères Barry, Robin et Maurice Gibb restent célèbres comme compositeurs de standards qui ont fait l’objet de quelques milliers d’adaptations au cours de ces quatre dernières décennies.

A leurs débuts, en 1958, les frères Gibb chantaient avec Paul Frost et Kenny Oricks, et étaient connus sous le nom de The Rattlesnakes, changeant de nom plus tard en Wee Johnnie Hayes and The Bluecats.

Les initiales "B.G." proviennent de différents noms : Barbara Gibb (leur maman); Barry Gibb; Brothers Gibb, Bill Goode, un disc-jockey , un organisateur de courses automobiles. En 1962, les trois frères deviennent The Bee Gees...
Ce groupe se compose au départ de trois frères : Barry Gibb et les jumeaux Robin Gibb et Maurice Gibb. Colin Petersen et Vince Melouney sont engagés en mars 1967. Dans le courant de 1969, ces deux derniers sont remerciés malgré les contrats de travail qui les lient aux Bee Gees. Robin Gibb se dispute aussi et s'en va et enregistre le tube que l'on connaît "Saved By The Bell".

En décembre 1970, Robin déclare dans Time Magazine : « If we hadn't been related, we would probably never have gotten back together » (« Si nous n'avions pas été parents, nous ne nous serions probablement jamais remis ensemble »).

Fin 1972, The Bee Gees deviennent Bee Gees.

Janvier 1974: un LP qui devait s'appeler "A Kick In The Head Is Worth Eight In The Pants" est rejeté par Robert Stigwood de la firme RSO Records (mais pas par Atlantic) (à laquelle est maintenant signé le groupe au Royaume-Uni et toujours distribué aux États-Unis d'Amérique par l'Atlantic Records Group via le label ATCO Records) suite au désastre des LP et single précédents (voir discographie internationale des "Long Play Records" ou "Albums", en anglais LP's et/ou 33 tours ou 30 centimètres en français). Stigwood suggère aux Bee Gees d'utiliser Arif Mardin comme nouveau producteur et de changer de cap musical.

En 1975, les Bee Gees constituent un line-up permanent comprenant Alan Kendall (guitare), Dennis Byron (batterie) et Blue Weaver (claviers) et enregistrent l'album funky Main Course à l'Atlantic's New York studios et Criteria studios à Miami, Floride, États-Unis d'Amérique.

Il fallait qu'ils se mettent à l'air du temps disait Barry. Et c'est ainsi que l'album Main Course (Menu Principal) atteint la 5e place du hit parade britannique le 2 août 1975 puis la 14e place du hit parade américain le 20 mars 1976. Le single qui en est extrait, Jive Talkin' est n° 5 au Royaume-Uni le 2 août 1975 puis n° 1 aux États-Unis le 9 août 1975 dans le Hot 100 du magazine Billboard.

You should be dancing est leur premier single à l'allure disco (n° 6 RU le 28 août 1976 ; n° 1 EU le 4 septembre 1976).

Insert : en décembre 1976 sort un double LP intitulé All This And World War II (bande originale du film éponyme) lequel ne contient que des chansons signées Lennon / McCartney. Les Bee Gees sont grandioses et versatiles avec leurs versions de Golden Slumbers/Carry That Weight, She Came In Through The Bathroom Window et Sun King. Toutefois, ce double LP ne sera pas un énorme succès ni aux EU ni au Royaume-Uni malgré une pléiade d'autres artistes : Richard (Riccardo) Cocciante, Lynsey De Paul, David Essex, Bryan Ferry, The Four Seasons, Peter Gabriel, Elton John, Frankie Laine, Jeff Lynne (Electric Light Orchestra ou ELO), Leo Sayer, Status Quo, Rod Stewart, Tina Turner, Frankie Valli (des Four Seasons) et, en solo ; Roy Wood (Wizzard, ELO) accompagnés par le London Symphony Orchestra…

En mars 1977, Robert Stigwood à la tête de sa propre firme de disques RSO Records et manager des Bee Gees, produit la musique disco du film Saturday Night Fever (La Fièvre du samedi soir). Il contacte le groupe, qui est en session d'enregistrements aux studios du Château d'Hérouville en France, demandant dans l'urgence 4 chansons pour la bande sonore du projet de son film. Finalement, ils en enregistrent 5 nouvelles et en donnent 2 autres.

Le 10 décembre 1977, la ballade "How Deep Is Your Love", extraite du film est n° 3 au Royaume-Uni et tope le Hot 100 du Billboard deux semaines plus tard.

En janvier 1978, le double LP contenant la bande sonore originale du film cartonne les charts internationaux et se vend à plus de 30 millions d'exemplaires.

Le 23 février 1978, les Bee Gees remportent le prix du "Best Pop Vocal Performance By A Duo, Group Or Chorus" pour How Deep Is Your Love au 20e annuel "Grammy awards".

Le 4 mars 1978, Stayin' alive se classe 4e au Royaume-Uni tandis que le même jour, Andy Gibb avec (Love is) Thicker than water co-écrit avec Barry détrône Stayin' alive de la première place.

Le 18 mars suivant, les Bee Gees au sommet de leur carrière musicale avec le classique disco Night Fever détrônent à leur tour Andy (Thicker) de la première place du Hit Parade américain. Night Fever est n° 1 au Royaume-Uni le 29 avril.

Le 6 mai 1978, Saturday Night Fever cartonne chez les Britanniques et est n° 1 mondial tandis que le groupe black Tavares se classe 32e aux EU avec la v.o. de More than a woman.

Les Bee Gees furent aussi célèbres que les Beatles (Paul McCartney a dit "c'était la chanson 'mining disaster' que Robert Stigwood m'a jouée. J'ai dit 'signez-les, ils sont grands' ! Et ils ont continué pour être encore plus grands ") avec, et de loin la longévité en plus mais à la différence près que les Beatles n'ont jamais enregistré une seule chanson des Bee Gees alors que ceux-ci l'avaient fait officiellement en 1978 pour la B.O.F. Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band et 19 mois auparavant pour la bande sonore du film All This And World War II, une œuvre de grande envergure qui réunissait une fameuse brochette d'artistes, sans compter que toutes les plages étaient signées Lennon / McCartney. Il y en a eu une quinzaine d'autres qui étaient restées dans les tiroirs de Festival Records, Australie (Ticket to Ride, We Can Work It Out, You Won't See Me, From Me to You, If I fell, Paperback Writer, Please Please Me, She Loves You, This boy, I Need You, I'll be back, Nowhere Man et Twist and Shout qui ont été éditées dans les années 1970 et 1990).

En mars 2003, Barry Gibb disait : "Robin et moi ne nous réunirons plus pour faire quelque chose ensemble, nous sommes si différents comme personnes. Il était sublime d'être ensemble dans un groupe mais beaucoup plus difficile d'être des frères. Nous n'avons aucun plan pour faire quelque chose à l'heure actuelle, mais qui sait ?"
